The Premier Record of 2025: The Artist's Masterpiece Secures the Top Place.

At first glance, this album may look more like a challenging scholarly quiz than the latest pop project by an artist whose previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Divided across 4 distinct movements and sung in 13 tongues, it is a breathtaking symphonic opus investigating feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and corporal transformation, often through the lens of various women saints. The dissolution of a romance—a theme treated with grounded honesty elsewhere—soars heavenward on this record, buoyed by the constant presence of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of contributors. Its sheer daring by itself renders the efforts of contemporary pop stars look rather laughable.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that this album manages to avoid overly intellectual posturing is nearly miraculous, and full credit going to the artist. While this is not the first time album to fuse the past and modern styles, its stakes feel far greater on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. The element that truly elevates this fourth album, beyond its multilayered tunes, rich arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential sense of fun. Much like the iconic artist during her peak, there is a wondrous quality to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing your heart apart, the listener still want to be alongside her for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly during the stunning piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful whirlpool for several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a comment prior to a comically exaggerated orchestral surge crashes in with comedic force. The song then segues to the wild track driven by galloping orchestration, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of Lux lies in the listener rarely exactly know—nor want to predict—what you is going next."

Nearly each song ends at a totally distinct point than where it started. A track explores the transient trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before collapsing in electronic cacophony. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous trap-infused work starts off dark and brooding, featuring menacing vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album is navigating the gap between radical innovation and mainstream appeal. It is little coincidence that the album has achieved the artist's first work to break into the upper reaches of major charts: at its core a collection of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language builds on a chorus that feels to gather more and more nagging melodies while it spins upward. That trick gets echoed by another powerful ballad that grows and constricts, intertwining layered melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along hook.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "emotional bully".
  • Across the album, the vocals carry a sharp edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for capital-A Art amid of impending artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried gems that requires time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. Where other major releases of the year felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the characters at it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common gossip about useless partners. It is a contemporary theatrical production from pop's truly restlessly creative practitioner.
