Seven alleged members of German far-left organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other European far-left and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was behind attacks on locations in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G. and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, pepper spray, disguises and mobile phones.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist previously active with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
